Looking to travel to Shawnee National Forest and do some hiking and possibly bike riding. Looked up averages and it looks like upper 50's for daytime highs and upper 30's at night. Is the weather far downstate as unpredictable as it is in Chicago area latter part of March?
We'll stay in Marion and do day trips; looking at Cave-In Rock, Garden of the Gods, Cache River & Fort Massac for hiking/visiting. Any other suggestions? Any non-chain restaurant suggestions?

Yes, it is very unpredictable, it could be 50's or it could be a high of zero, with ice or snow, there is just no telling. And don't go by what it was the week before, that means nothing. Weather is day by day.Sorry can't get any closer than that, but no one can. Just keep an eye on the weather map, they are pretty accurite for about a week. Good Luck

Make sure you try to check out the Alto Pass area if you haven't been there.

Looked on the map (without my reading glasses) didn't spot it. Where is it?

It is a very small area down by Anna, Il. Google it. Shouldn't be far from where your going. Wineries (sp) bed and breakfast, and orchards.

Knew it sounded familiar. I've passed it driving from Anna to Carbondale on rte 127. I always notice the orchards. Beautiful and top of the hill. Great idea.
