I currently live in Idaho, but I was born and raised in Northern Illinois. I want to return to the Midwest, but I do not want to return to Illinois. Taxes are too high, and fiscally it is a messed up state. The town I grew up in in Illinois was called Channahon. It was a town where multiple rivers met, and we had a canal and a tow path. I want to find a town like Channahon in Indiana. It doesn't have to be as small as Channahon (Channahon was only 2200 people when I was growing up), but I want there to be a rivers (or confluence of rivers), a canal, and a tow path. I have been trying to read up on canals and tow paths in Indiana, but I am confused as to whether these canals still exists today. In short, what is a nice town or city to move too where I might find a resemblance to my Illinois childhood. I am not interest much in Northern Indiana. I want it to be more Southerly. Right off the bad I starting looking at Evansville. I guess because it is on the Ohio river, and it is in a Southerly location. I plan to move very soon, actually. I will getting on a plane next month and flying to Indianapolis, and begin a search for a place to rent. I am a 57 year old man with a few cats. As for income, I plan to day-trade the stock market. So I won't need employment. Any thoughts, please?

I'm not aware of any canals that still are working canals.

You might check out Metamora, IN. https://www.metamoraindiana.com/index.php/visitors-info

There is also the canal in Indianapolis. I suspect that's not what you want.

Indiana's historic canals. https://www.in.gov/history/2518.htm might be a good place to start.

Well, I know that the canals aren't actually working canals, right? They stopped being working canals well before the start of the 1900s. What I meant is I didn't know if the canals were even still in existence i.e., have water in them. I assume the canal that we had in our town still has water in it. I do know the tow path that ran beside it is now part of a very large trail system.

The town of Delphi has a portion of a canal.....they celebrate, preserve it and have a really nice museum.

No idea about the canals, but you could definitely get your river fill with the many towns along the Ohio. It's a great, slow-paced, low cost area.

Fort Wayne is a lot bigger than where you grew up but it is nicknamed Three Rivers for a reason. The confluence of the St Joseph and St Mary Rivers in downtown Fort Wayne form the Maumee River. I believe all parts of the old Wabash Canal have been filled in but you can still see a pumping station. And all the rivers have greenways along them.

Goshen, IN is smaller but it still has a river and a canal. The towpath there has been converted to a greenway along the canal and the dam for the canal still exists as well.

Do you have a specific question, or are you just interested in waterways? Evansville is on the Ohio River, and Pigeon Creek is the largest "waterway" in the city. It has a trail along it for much of its length in the city.
