Hi there everyone.

I am from Texas and will relocate to the Indy Metro area soon. I am reading a lot about the current property tax situation and discussions. I know that the property tax amounts increased dramatically for some in Indiana. I also know that Indiana has a "Circuit Breaker System" in place. Is this system actually in effect? Will it not cap off the maximum tax rate at 2% of the assessed property value?

Any advise is very welcome. I know this is probably a sour point to touch with many of you, but I am trying to get my information straight before I move to Indiana.

Cheers,

Steffen

They're still trying to revamp the property tax situation. Our annual taxes from the latest reassessment are more than 2% of assessed value, but not by a whole lot.

It basically depends on where you live. Our taxes (we are on the west side of marion county) didn't increase any more than they do every year.

Others that live closer to the city have had it much differently....it simply depends on the area.

Hello Texas!

I moved from Dallas in 2005. I have noticed that the property taxes here on the west side are about half of what they were in Dallas. The caveat here are things like my sewer rate of $45.00 per month, and the fact that this State collects income tax and personal property tax. So, it just about equals out, for now.

The property tax fiasco is not going to be fixed any time soon. While I would like to see property tax eliminated, I do not want them to start doing income tax. That is a worse disaster in the making. IMHO, we are starting to feel what I call the Michigan effect. More and more people are filing for and receiving government benefits for being unemployed, poor, etc. To pay for these programs, the State and the local governments lean more heavily on those who still have jobs, until those are gone and everyone is pulled into poverty. It is a destructive cycle with no end in sight.
