i'm 33 and single, relocating to indy from atlanta this summer and trying to figure out where to live..ideally i want a 2br apartment, $700-900ish.
i'm still trying to figure out what's the best move, and here's what i've gotten from the info i've gathered so far:
-broad ripple is fun, but young. also possibly more petty crime (ie car break ins, vandalism)
-downtown is also fun, but from what i've seen, kind of pricey. plus i dont know how big of a place i could afford there, and i want my place to be homey (also thinking this of broad ripple).
-river crossing and river ridge both look SUPER nice, but are on the high end of my budget and it might be a far trek to get to work every day--apparently traffic from the northside into the city isnt great
so now i'm expanding my search to the west side, in search of a happy medium. not that i am ruling anything out at this point, jjust trying to get a feel for everything. just call me goldilocks...

465 tends to separate the really bad area along 38th street from the not so bad area just west of 465 along 38th street.

However I would not live in the area where Waterstone apts are. (I know nothing about those specific apartments, but I know the area. I have relatives who live just west and north of there along Eagle Creek, a very nice neighborhood. The problem they run into is they are always traveling to the northside to go shopping, to go to the malls, to visit friends, relatives.....they feel very isolated. Avon isn't any closer for them either, so they are always going to the northside.

You need to decide what is important to you.

I used to live at Deercross Apts, which is across 38th Street off of Eagle Creek Parkway. I commuted over to Castleton for work.

As far as the general area, I liked living over there. Having Marsh and Target right there is very convenient. I never felt isolated from anything, but I am not strongly tied to the northside beyond my job.

I lived in the Bayhead Village apartments for a year when I first moved to Indy...they are nearby to Waterstone. Its a nice area to get your feet wet with the city. Downtown is about 15 minutes away. Avon and 86th Street commercial districts are about 15 minutes...and there are plenty of restaurants and such in the immediate area.

As you get aquainted with the city you can find the neighborhood that ultimately suits you best.

You will quickly learn that mortgage payments are actually cheaper than rent in Indianapolis. So if you plan on becoming a permanent resident you will want a house.

Good luck

Thanks for all the info..I have to keep telling myself I am only committing to a year in one place, then I can find the neighborhood that I want to live in permanently. I am going up for a weekend in June to apartment-hunt, and will be staying w/a friend who is going to give me a tour of the city. I think I will just kind of know when I find the right place..trying to search on-line can be overwhelming.
