Just curious - if you're looking for a service or a product (all references and word of mouth aside) where do you get your information - internet or yellowpages?

Google is your friend
(seriously, when the yellow pages get delivered to my home every year they go right in the recycling bin).

What is this yellowpages of which you speak?
Mine goes from doorstep to the red bin as well. Or I guess it's green bin now. It's really a massive waste of resources, because I bet a significant percentage of households never opens it, and many get thrown away.
I use Google, City Data, BBB, etc. Depending on the service, I use specific web sites as well. For instance, when moving check out Moving: How to avoid Moving Company Scams

You might think twice before throwing them all away. Once the power was out and my cell phones were dead and I needed to find someone to fix a leaky water heater. I used some sort of phone book to find them. I can't say as it was the Yellow Pages or not because I call all of them the Yellow Pages.
I use search engines and then obviously follow up on the reviews of the place as well. Thanks for the input everyone...hope to hear from more people as well :-)
I use a combination of City Data recommendations cross referenced with the BBB site. That's how I found my my HVAC service and my plumber, and I was very satisfied.

Sometimes neither ... we get a local recommended business directory from a business rating service (not a phone book precisely, just a publication that lists the top half-dozen or so businesses in various caregories based on user reviews), and I also sometimes use recommendations from friends, neighbors, and cow orkers.
I throw out all my phone books as soon as they are delivered.
