To me, the idea of forums, is to reach out to people.

Do you ever get fed up with reaching out, just to get your hand slapped repeatedly?

Can you tell a little more about what you mean by "reaching out to people"? I would assume you mean reaching out in friendship, giving emotional support, letting people know they are not alone with their bad experiences, etc. Is this correct? If so, I would say you are probably female, as you females are the nurturers, for the most part. (Sure, many men are good at that too, but I think percentage-wise more women are).

As a male (or maybe being male has nothing to do with it?), to me the idea of forums is to provide an exchange of information and an intellectual debate platform. I have nothing against "reaching out to people", just a different idea of what is most important about my participation here. I like to learn from folks who are particularly knowledgeable about a particular subject or aspect of a subject. I wonder if your frustration comes from people like me, although I would never "slap the hand" of someone who has posted in a friendly manner. I confess to having slapped a few arrogant hands, however. I will be interested to see how this discussion develops.

I thought Facebook and the like were for reaching out. Forums are for sharing information and having fun.

There have to be rules - thus the hand slaps.

Apparently not. I've been doing it since 1977.

Thank you for responding. I don’t believe it to be persons such as you, you have responded in too nice a manner.

I think reaching out can take many forms. Just to bother to post on a thread could be considered reaching out by some.
I’m sure to many, these forums could be the only form of meaningful communication they have on a daily basis. ( I could include myself in that group ).

When starting a thread, or just posting, it would be nice to be met by something other than an opponent that seems to be in the middle of some kind of imaginary battle, in which the original poster inadvertently becomes the target of hostility. Thankfully with this thread I have. ( There are other forms of hostility, but they remain hidden ).

It seems that City-Data has become for many, the place to treat people as punch bags. ( Call it a stress reliever if you will ).

Don’t get me wrong, I am not tarring everyone with the same brush, there are some genuinely nice, and intelligent members on here. Even a few of the moderators are very pleasant, caring, and helpful people, and I am grateful for that.

For now, I don’t think I will elaborate too far.

Oh, by the way, I’m male.

Facebook is inappropriate for certain personality types.

Oh rules, interesting things rules, there for some, but not for others.
