Just curious how long you guys have been using forums. It's been quite a while for me, I've been using them since the late 90's.

Oldest forum that I still currently post at is IGN boards, which I registered at in 2000. How about you guys, what's the oldest forum you still post at?

Registered at my first forum in 2001, I was 14. Mostly hung around chat rooms and IM before that, heh.

Probably 1997, Delphi forums, when I was 11.

I was hanging around newsgroups for a year before that. Newsgroups actually served the purpose that web forums fulfill now until around 1999-2000, when the spam problem increased exponentially and web forums based around platforms like UBB (Ultimate Bulletin Board) and phpBB began to take off. Now many ISPs do not even provide NNTP (newsgroup) service, leaving it to gateways like Google Groups. The state forums on City-Data in many ways resemble the regional or state newsgroups, such as mn.general (Minnesota) or ba.general (Bay Area).

Probably since the 80s (I started on local sites (BBS's)) with my commodore 64

Used to hang out on various Usenet newsgroups like rec.travel.air, say late 1990s. I also hung out on Prodigy aviation forums in early 90s, and later AOL aviation and hockey forums in the mid 90s. It was around 2001 that I started checking out internet forums. I preferred newsgroups. I finally joined Flyertalk in 2003 as my first forum, but have been on plenty of others since. C-D is a much more recent one than some of the others. I've also quit most of them because there's not much time anymore. Some use this screen name, and some have different names.

Same here.

Compuserve had a pretty decent forum structure, but usenet was more complete and raucous.

Don't remember -- at least 13-14 years if not a bit longer.

If BBS's count, probably 1984 or so (at the astounding speed of 300 baud). My time online was destroying my daughters love life, thus I ended up installing a second phone line just for the computer, which was great and kept it until probably 1995 or so when I became a beta tester for the local cable company cable ISP service.

My son dug up the first forum for me and suggested that I could have an interesting out let where I could sound off...It was and American virtual government site...I really got to like young Americans . That might have been almost 7 years ago...can't remember- Funny after all these years I have run out of things to say...But then I will learn something and I am good to go again.

I believe it is good for you as you age- some play cards- some do cross word puzzles - to keep in mental shape...I like struggling to come up with variations of different concepts - besides it's kind of cool to know- grand children can check you out years after you are gone....and find out what kind of person they were spawned from- I like the idea of digital immortality....to be archived forever is some machine somewhere...
