There have always been some irritating issues with flickr for me. Their "new" recent format now makes it more irritating for me.
But in defense of flickr, they have only been down once for me, a few hours, since 2006, and that was during their "upgrade".
It really depends on what you plan or want to do. I have hosted my own site a few times over the years just for certain photo related purposes and other features.
Why? I like it better than Photobucket. It is cheaper than Photobucket. I have 33,000+ photos on flickr which I have been using since 2006.

Right, Poncho.
Flickr has been rock steady in terms of reliability.
OTOH...
Years ago, I saw a guy on ActiveRain groaning about Flickr deleting about 3500 photos, in error.
One click, and his work was gone. They comped him a year of Flickr Pro for his trouble. $24.95.
It is all they could do. The stuff was gone.
YES, he should have had a backup. He didn't. But, it was news to me that Flickr could dump my photos by error....
So, I went looking for another site.
I don't want to host them myself. And Flickr and Zenfolio give me embeddable slideshows for websites.
I use Shutterfly and Picasa. I like them both. I started using Shutterfly when yahoo photos closed and Shutterfly has more and more improved features. As for Picasa it works well with Google+ and has many different sharing, tagging and mapping options which are nice.
