So about a week ago my modem had one of the lights turn orange. I called Comcast and they said it was the upstream light and it was an end of life model. I had bought it a few years ago so I didn't have to pay them rent and it saved me a few hundred dollars.
So I check their approved list of modems and buy a Docsis 3.0 that was on their list. Literally ran out to Walmart on a Sunday afternoon.
It was an Arris for $70 and After trying to get it to work for about an hour with Comcast techs in the Philippines the lady told me we should schedule a service call. By the way the Arris has 8s and Bs and 0s and I didn't know if they were Os. Plus they were so small even with readers they were hard to make out.
I tell her it was working fine earlier that my end of life one stopped working, she tells me this new one is also end of life. But it was on their approved list and was 3.0. So I returned it and bought a Netgear modem with router built in and cost $120 but after a shot while I we were able to get it working, I'm just worn out over the whole experience.
I think EOL is just a scam to lower their support obligations. After all, what would change that they need EOL?
I don't know if my old one was Docsis 3, but if they upgrade the system and the old ones won't work that could be why. The one I returned was Docsis 3 and Comcast told me it was end of life.
That is why it's more convenient, and less frustrating to just rent the cable providers!
I'd rather buy, I saved over $300 by buying my own with the old one. This new one will pay for itself in a year, it has a 2 year warranty, plus an extra year from my credit card protection and should save me a few hundred dollars in a few years.

I had one modem that worked flawlessly for 7 years for approximate savings of $550. The new modem installed last year has worked flawlessly and has already save me about $30....
