actually comparing real returns to nominal returns it looks like higher rates , once adjusted for inflation didn't help much . once adjusted for inflation recoveries took a whole lot longer then just looking at nominal returns .

2000 took 13 years to recover once inflation adjusted

you can see here , once adjusted for inflation higher rates really did not help as much as we think and recoveries still took a whole lot longer than we think when we look at just nominal returns .

damn....how much you got in your Roth IRA?
I've been maxing out for several years and only have 40k in there.

Got lucky on two stock purchases: Amazon and Apple. Bought Amazon about five years ago and so far have quadrupled my investment, and bought Apple about six years ago and now have tripled my investment. I bought them both on the principle of buying into an organization whose business model I thought was solid. I regret not having put more money into them, but I am not complaining.

Back in the eighties I participated in a corporate visit to Microsoft (at the time there were only three buildings at the Redmond site). I came back and told my wife these people were really on to something so I rearranged my savings and was able to invest slightly over 10K. Obviously it was a great performer and too bad I could not get more.

So, how much is that 10k worth now?

Yeah, when I was lucky enough to have one position turn $7k into $220k+, it has really pumped up the Roth. Smartest thing I ever did was to let the position run. But it is time to diversify; will probably sell the last 500 if the price gets up toward $250.

About 3.5 million. Unfortunately I sold at about 800,000.
