trade ? trading implies not investing but speculating on making quick hits .

trading is not something that should be done by someone asking such a question .

on the other hand if you mean investing then the stock market consists of 5000 different stocks . mutual funds are just collections of either all or some of those stocks that make up the market .

most of us who are long term investors do not trade . we may make a few portfolio changes every now and then but trading implies something different

A mutual fund is a package of stocks managed by a fund manager. The manager makes the decisions about what to buy and sell. Everyone who invests in that mutual fund owns the same stocks. Different funds specialise in different types of stock, so you have to pick a fund that invests in stocks that you think are appealling. But it is stock market investing.

Another way to play the stock market is for you to pick your own stocks and buy your own selection where it is just you investing and not a group.

Based on your question. Start with play (no real money) money. You have a lot to learn so be sure to work on your education.

You have no business trading stocks. Just buy Vanguard stock index funds regularly and forget about them for 20+ years.
