Very poor performing "growth" fund;

  • Starting balance $26,335.29 at January 1 2010
  • Ending balance $153,990.83 at December 31, 2018
  • Contributions totaling $98,810.39 over the eight years.

Am I correct that the percentage gain in total is 23% (so 2.875% per annum)?

Or is the total return 18%?

I need to use this information to convince work to change fund options!

Thank you.

The numbers I have given are net - so I just need the return based on those numbers. Thanks.

You can’t get an accurate picture without knowing the contributions each year ... suppose you had very little money invested until year 6 ....then threw a lot in years 7 and 8 vs putting a lot in 8 years ago and little the subsequent years.....

I suggest you plug the fund ticker in PV with the date range with contribution schedule and it will spit out everything you need to know.

For return you need to calculate MWRR which PV does for you.

To get a correct number, you need to account for when your contributions were made. If it's every paycheck you have a lot of data to enter. Assuming contributions were relatively evenly distributed, that's very poor performance (9 years), I would think just the numbers you have would be enough to show that. If it isn't enough to convince them, I'm not sure anything would be.

There is no fund ticker, it's a custom fund made up of a bunch of investments.
I just need a general idea, doesn't need to be 100% accurate. Contributions made pretty evenly over the years.

Isn't it just a math problem that can be calculated?

Jan 1 2010 starting bal 26,335.29 - contributed 7,048.32 - ending bal 34,812.94
Jan 1 2011 start 34,812.94 - contrib 27,204.75 - end 57,819.24
Jan 1 2012 start 57,819.24 - contrib 8,197.02 - end 71,181.51
Jan 1 2013 start 71,181.51 - contrib 11,687.48 - end 97,204.68
Jan 1 2014 start 97,204.68 - contrib 11,874.98 - end 110,052.74
Jan 1 2015 start 110,052.74 - contrib 8,097.64 - end 114,910.63
Jan 1 2016 start 114,910.63 - contrib 7,955.36 - end 130,616.98
Jan 1 2017 start 130,616.98 - contrib 8,329.92 - end 163,116.26
Jan 1 2018 start 163,116.26 - contrib 8,414.92 - end 153,990.83

Contributions total $98,810.39

You're right jdhpa, it would be over 9 years.

well, then you can compare with S&P500 and see how you stand. If you had invested your contributions, spread across 108 months equally with your starting balance then your ending would be $232,000 with a MWRR of 11+%. So, your fund underperformed the S&P500 substantially.

Also, since you front loaded some of your capital it would actually be even higher.
