I already know the answer to this question, my portfolio is too heavy in both Apple and Amazon stock. I have owned Apple since 2013 and have over a 400% gain in the stock. It is held in my Roth IRA. As of today, it’s 34% of my portfolio. I don’t want to sell it yet, because next year with 5G coming out it should go up more, but I know I should pair it down. I also have 15% in Amazon of which I am up 100%. So Amazon and Apple make up 49% of my portfolio.
Go ahead and rip me a new one.

You can’t hold cash in your IRA account?

I am 64 years old and retired. Right now I have 67% in equities. I am going to sell 1/3 of my Apple today and 1/3 of my Amazon.
I don’t follow that you can’t hold cash in your IRA, a money market is cash.

Since both of these stocks are in your Roth IRA, where you won't run up any capital gains if you sell them, you're doing the right thing by selling some shares now in order to better diversify your portfolio. At your age, you can't afford the risk of a major decline in your portfolio value.

I just sold 500 shares of Apple. That was not easy, but I had way too much money in one stock. I still own 1000 shares.

Good problem to have

You probably want to have an index fund like spy for the equity portion of your portfolio to reduce the company risk.

I have index funds, but this profit has to go into cash. At 64 years old, I should be around 45-55% max in equities. I still have 1000 shares of Apple, and will hold it until 5G earnings comes out.

I know the feeling. I had 1000 shares of TYL and it had grown to a massive % of my Roth. So I did the logical thing and sold 500 shares. But the stock had done so well for me that I felt like I was saying goodbye to an old friend.
