My family and I plan on relocating to Iowa next year. We are looking at Johnston, Grimes, Quad Cities and Des Moines. We have two children that will be attending elementary school. I was wondering how the schools are, what the housing market is like, what the hunting is like, and any other info anyone could provide. Thank you.

Schools in Johnston are very good, close to Des Moines but still have the quite small feel to it!

I grew up in the QCA and can answer any specific questions. The schools are good there. The housing market kind of flattened out in Iowa but never really tanked like a lot of the country.

I've lived in Iowa for longer than I care to admit
. If I were picking one of those options from the first post des moines would win in a land slide. The larger city gives you a much better ability to find meaningful work. (Thank god you didn't list Iowa City--only move there if you've accepted a job offer from UofI) The free ways are still excellent, and the traffic is lighter than most medium sized cities.
Where are you coming from? That's a huge factor. Be prepared for stupid cold in the winter.

What kind of hunting do you want to do? The best deer hunting is in the southeast part of the state, but the bird hunting is best in the northern part of the state. Either is a reasonably short trip from either the DSM area or the Quad Cities.

PS. While I've put my vote in for Des Moines. I'd still consider look at moving to other places as well. How you ended up with that final list of destinations is beyond me

We are currently living in SE Arkansas, but moved here from the Galesburg, IL, area about five years ago. We lived there for a couple years, so we have an idea (maybe) what the weather is like in Iowa.

Lots of good lake and river fishing near the QCA. Hunting is popular near there but I don't know much about it. I'd imagine both are popular anywhere you end up in Iowa.

Waterfowl hunting is good in SE Iowa and anywhere along the Mississippi, I don't know about the rest of the state.
Iowa just had its first dove season since 1918 this Fall, I haven't heard any results.

. If I were picking one of those options from the first post des moines would win in a land slide. The larger city gives you a much better ability to find meaningful work. (Thank god you didn't list Iowa City--only move there if you've accepted a job offer from UofI) The free ways are still excellent, and the traffic is lighter than most medium sized cities.
