Cedar Rapids is building one of these as they extend Highway 100 (Collins Road). The article states this will be the second one built in Iowa. Does anyone know where the other one is located (possibly Des Moines?). I've read other states implementing more of these. Believe they are also called Diamond exchanges or something like that.

Finally!
The extension of State 100 will allow for markedly improved vehicle movement in northwest & west central Cedar Rapids when it's finished & take some of the volume strain off of currently used arterial roads in the area.
As the link info above notes, it's been a long time in planning.
I suspect that the pace of development on the westside will pick up as a result of the extension.
The first diverging diamond interchange in Iowa is to be completed in 2015 at I-80 & Alice's Rd. in Waukee.
There are a couple of diverging diamond interchanges on the north side of Atlanta but I have yet to try one out. They are relatively scarce but the concept is in a growth mode.

Yes, there's been a lot of controversy leading up to the extension of 100 from the conservationists as the highway will run through the Rock Island Forest Preserve. I have to pass through the construction zone every day, but it's nice to see the progress of more stores/retail in the area, IMO.

Interesting ...it took me a few times to get comfortable with the lanes and lights in the intersection when getting back on I-35 N from Jordan Creek mall.

I agree that this intersection is a bit intimidating at first!

Developers are excited! -- from the news story

Who knew that the DOT spending TWO HUNDRED MILLION dollars of tax payer dollars to enhance the infrastructure that is adjacent to land the developers bought up before the knowledge was public would cause them to be excited? Privatization of the gains from socially created services sure is exciting to anyone that can send it to their bank accounts.

So in short,

The government took 50 years to make this happen. It is going to cost of a ton of money for tax payers. Developers are going to reap an enormous portion of the benefit, despite paying a very small portion of the cost.

Yeah, that sounds like what I recall from living near there.

Wow, that took them a million years to push through. It's so clunky how Collins Rd dies off at Edgewood. That will be a great change for the west side of the city.
