Jackson Jambalaya: Zoo Cuts Paychecks

Anyone who has dealt with the city understands that some employees are unmotivated and uncaring, but I wonder if this is a calculated move to drive the current zoo management out in order to install new management so someone's friend, family member or associate will profit? I vaguely recall the contract with the current zoo management is not being renewed, so maybe this is a ploy to save the money for the new management company?

It makes so much sense to move the zoo near the intersection of Lakeland and I55, the city could develop this area and gain a bunch of sales tax revenue (infrastructure is already there). Sure the city would have to work with the state, but that is doable. The golf course is sitting there lightly used and occupying a lot of valuable real estate.

Even if the Zoo in its current location is updated/redeveloped into something very nice, it will still not get many more visitors. It is in an out of the way location, not near any other draws and in a depressed area.

No question here, the answer is to move the zoo. The zoo knows this, as does the City. That email is now more written documentation (ammunition) for the zoo to use against the City when they start the political grandstanding. The zoo will be moving, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Jackson's future is in that centralized area from Fondren to downtown, and back up to Lakeland and Eastover. Everyone knows this, and there's really nothing the City officials can do about it besides complaining.

The Mayor knows it too, but he also knows he has to do the political game. He needs that money it will eventually generate.

The issue in Jackson is that so many palms need to be greased, projects start out in such huge holes that they sometimes can't recover.

I read in the Clarion Ledger a few days ago that someone claimed the blighted neighborhood around the zoo is because fewer people are visiting it.
