I agree with you in terms of the politics and economics of energy production in the US. Moreover - why would anyone think that increases in the cost of energy would only affect the cost of auto transportation? They would also increase the cost of transporting people and goods by air - rail - etc. Some of those costs could/would be passed on to customers - others couldn't/wouldn't. Which is why the Dow Jones Transportation Index was down 4+% this week. Robyn

it will backfire big-time because people will vote Obama out of office! Everyone jumped all over pres Bush 1 day after Katrina, but Obama got a free pass with the oil spill. Obama always waits too long to make decisions. But high speed rail is NOT a priority worth talking about. I would love to have it, but there are more important things that need to be done right now.

Read the FRA's HSR Strategic Plan (FRA is the Federal Railroad Administration, created by the DOT in 1966 -- it's not some new entity). If you don't have the time (or no inclination) to read it, at least skim through it. There's an entire section on funding for example. Shovel-ready projects (which Florida is!) are eligible for grants and other such funding methods. It's much easier for politicians and Negative Nellies to proclaim taxpayers will fund HSR.

Completely electric?? No. Some, yes.

Truly, once a person is better informed - which means not basing an opinion on what we amateurs say here - then a person can form his/her own judgement whether HSR is a good idea or not.

There's a great deal of chit-chat here about the wonders of other rail systems in the world. How praytell do you think those countries got to where they are today with rail travel??? Do you believe that France's TGV just magically appeared? It's truly worth a bit of online research of facts to understand how far behind the USA is.
Wow! Who do you think pays "for grants and other such funding methods"? Do you think it might be taxpayers? If not, can you tell me how I can get a "Grant and other such funding" tree for my backyard?

"Truly, once a person is better informed - which means not basing an opinion on what we amateurs say here ..."
Which "professional" told you that grants aren't paid by taxpayers?

When you made a reference to how far behind the USA is, were you referring to knowledge of basic economics and finance?

There is no gas crisis in the US. We don't have a gasoline shortage. Drilling has nothing to do with why prices are increasing right now.

The law suit was dismissed this morning and Scott refused it again after a short call with the national DOT director.

My home state of Rhode Island is looking to pick up some of Florida's giveback. As much as Rhode Island has had a tremendous amount of problems as a state the past few years, they have made significant gains with their runs from Boston to the airport in RI and also to NY. Of course a state the size of RI makes any rail improvements a positive step in the right direction (everyone gains).

I'm a muni bond investor. Would never invest 10 cents in Rhode Island bonds. It's a AA2 Moody's - even before it starts to spend money on nonsense like this. Robyn
