Hello All,

I'm looking to start a business in Palm coast or surrounding towns. Is there a real need for any service related jobs or restaurants? Thanks for any suggestions. I've thought about everything from a dunkin donuts to landscaping to doggy day care.. I've got alot of experience in many different types of businesses. Any suggestions would help alot. Thanks!

Palm Coast needs more people with money to buy whatever you're trying to sell. Robyn

IMO, Robyn's answer was not snotty. I believe she was trying to make a valid point. Palm Coast does not have enough people with needs and funds so support the businesses that are already there. Hundreds of people have already been in the place you are...trying to start a business that will be a success... in a depressed area with high unemployment. If you want to start a business and you want it to be successful, Palm Coast probably isn't a good place to be.

ssclulow was right. I wasn't trying to be snotty (although it might have sounded like that to you). Palm Coast is an area of low income retired people - and low income working people. They're not willing to pay much (or anything) for what a small business you might open would offer. Robyn

No, it is not all low income retirees and low income working people. We've got retirees here from NY and NJ with their pensions, SS and whatever other monies they may have. Low income while there are quite a few esp. the younger one's, there are plenty who have good local jobs or travel for jobs and we make very good money. Of course maybe it's not your kind of money Robyn. Perhaps the folks who live here don't have to keep up with the Jones' as in larger towns? We have plenty of gated communities including the Hammock Beach & Island Estates areas with very big bucks.

The restaurants here are doing very well and with the big boys having arrived, obviously they have confidence in this area. We are now getting a 2nd Panera's and Carrabba's is coming! Yippee! New construction has started back up even though there are still foreclosure's aplenty. It is a very good town for middle class folks with affordable taxes.

In reply to the OP's question, unfortunately right now I do not know what small business is needed. Pets are a big thing here and there are a few pet sitting services. Nature is a very big part of this area also. Perhaps the Chamber of Commerce could assist you with some information. Good Luck!

I have to take issue with you on this one, Robyn. Even low-income retired and low-income working people have certain needs. And someone has to provide those needs at prices that can be afforded by those people.
And let's not get the idea that relative to Palm Coast we are Beverly Hills here in Jax and SJC. We are all going through a very depressing period in our economy.

I agree that Palm Coast is not populated totally with low income people, but I do believe that the needs of the population for products and services are being met by the business people and merchants already operating there. There is quite a large number of snowbirds who are only living there for part of the year. Businesses have a difficult time surviving when large segments of the population are not living in the area for the entire year. Another drawback is the fact that a large percentage of the working population works in Jacksonville or Daytona. These commuters use their lunch hours to run their errands, go to the dentist, etc. which takes away from the local Palm Coast merchants.

Palm Coast needs you to post your query in the proper place, like the general "Florida" board, as PC is not part of the Jax area.

In defence of the OP, the words "surrounding towns" were mentioned. Jax is close enough.
