You've become much more agreeable since your very first words of this thread. Time for a change is very understandable...I hope you and your family enjoy your future location.

Default ui

parks71,
I wish you luck with your, hopefully, impending relocation. Regarding your factually challenged statement "You are 2 times more likely to be murdered here than the average major city in the US. We are top 5 in the nation for aids, STDs, drunk drivers.": the murder and nonnegligent homicide rate for 2007 nationally for cities with populations exceeding 500,000 was 13.7 per 100,000 residents according to the FBI's statistics. Jacksonville: 15.7. Aids: while our rate is quite high, we don't make it into the top 10. Std's: not even in the top 20 for syphylis or gonorrhea. Drunk driving: 69th according to Men's Health. In fact the Morgan Qunito Awards lists Jacksonville as the 10th SAFEST city in the Nation for cities with populations exceeding 500,000. Parks, that took me about 10 min. to research and compose. I would hope that a $100K earner could do better. Misinformation FTW.

good job, now go get 2008s stats, your right 07 you were only 1.55 time the national average to get murdered in this city. Now go check 08. The aids and STDs is for florida in general.

15.7 is not 1.55 times 13.7, which is the average for comparable cities. We can't compare Jacksonville to Lincoln, Nebraska, but we can compare it to Baltimore or Charlotte or Birmingham, etc. I would say in the danger department we compare very favorably to Bmore LoL.

This is very ironic, my co worker was just robbed at gun point at 11am this morning downtown where you would think it would be half way safe during the day.

In 2007, Jacksonville Beach's crime rate was 7,221 per 100,000 people. Even though it fell 3.3 percent from the previous year, it still had the highest crime rate in the county. Although Jacksonville had a hundred more murders and many more property crimes than Jacksonville Beach last year, its crime rate was 6,271 per 100,000.
The crime rate is the number of homicides, sex crimes, robberies, assaults, burglaries and thefts in relation to a city's population. It's widely considered the best way to fairly compare one area to another.
Jacksonville Beach held the same distinction in 2006, according to statistics from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in Tallahassee. In 2006, when Jacksonville Beach's crime rate was 7,709, Jacksonville had a crime rate of 5,961, St. Augustine's rate was 6,896, Fernandina's was 4,731, Orange Park's was 3,973 and St. Johns County's was 2,535.

Ok, we get it. You don't like Jacksonville and now you're planning a relocation. Stop bringing the rest of us down.

Default To the point made by Joe 452.....

[quote=Joe 4520832257;6898757]How much you want to bet that this guy lives 15+ miles from the city center, if not outside the county entirely? Most people who b*tch and moan about Jacksonville like that don't live in the traditional "city" but rather in some far-flung subdivision that's only part of Jacksonville by technicality of our huge city limits.

For the people thinking of moving here - consider the above quote. From lurking on this board, my observation is that the folks with the highest degree of satisfaction live in the older, quaint, artistic areas (Riverside, San Marco etc.). And if they're raising kids, they can afford Bolles or some other selective schools.
If you're in a far flung subdivision, you're pretty much living like anyone else in this country - but without a snow shovel.

My cars has been broken into twice last year and my house was 3 years ago.

Every single day when you turn on the news someone was killed or a killer is on the loose. The school my daughter goes to which is the closest high school to the beach other than the one ON the beach is rated at a D- overall. Thats TERRIBLE. Once this year I have had to keep her home due to a kid saying they are bringing a gun on her bus and 3 weeks ago while shes at school, the school went on code yellow and locked everyone int he class due to a kid having a knife at school.

I dont have to prove any of this because its public record, check the crime rate statistics. You are 2 times more likely to be murdered here than the average major city in the US. We are top 5 in the nation for aids, STDs, drunk drivers.

Our reading scores suck and the cost of living which used to be a big plus is now well above the national average. For what? This used to be a nice quiet city, over the past 10 years it has gone to hell. The schools were never good though and Paxon, the school you speak of was just on the news for having some of the most toxic air in the US to breath. Do you really want to move here banking on the fact your kids will go to a magnet school??? Which happens to be right in the middle of some of the worst parts of jacksonville?

I will be moving out but I found these forums by looking for new cities. My wifes whole familiy is here and shes finally had enough, were getting out of here or I would have been gone long ago. The weather everyone brags about can be found A LOT of places with less crime, better schools and lower cost of living.
Interesting rant. Although I will agree that Paxon is in a bad part of town, Stanton's area in Durkeeville is not some rough, BUT those are both Black areas of Jacksonville, do you feel uncomfortable with that aspect? It is ok if you do, just curious to know. I am assuming your child goes to Sandlewood or Fletcher not exactly sure....and you stated they have a D-Rating? The Media in Jacksonville does love their crime stories...why? I really don't know but I think they blow too many of the stories up. Have you tried getting your kids into Bolles? Isn't that like a special school also?
