I know they're campy and all, but does anyone have an opinion on the best ghost tour in St Augustine? I'd prefer a walking tour over a train/trolley.

My favorite, so far, has been the Ghosts and Gravestones "Trolley of the Doomed" tour. it is the most theatrical of all the tours, with the narrators dressing in costume and acting out the part of "ghosts." Even if you don't experience anything creepy or take any strange photos, the tour itself is fun and you'll learn some interesting history about the city.

We just did this last night.
Having done the trolley - I think a walking tour would be more fun. And the folks who enjoyed it the most had a few drinks under their belt.
The people who believe in the paranormal and the kids who get overly scared make the tour more interesting. Some drunks walking in the street participated, too. Very corny fun.
So, I'd say the make up of your group is more important than the tour company.
The re-enactor (only one on this tour) at the jail house did a VERY good job. Our tour guide was nice, but her endless ghost stories weren't terribly interesting.

I would second the drinking part. I have done the walking and trolley tours, and drinking improves the experience.

We did the Shivers and Awe tour, and were a bit unimpressed. The guide was okay, but not as theatrical as some of the other tour guides.

And, obviously, alcohol did help. (Pizzalley's has a fantastic happy hour - 2 for 1 drinks, a free slice of pizza, and $5 for a 10" pizza. Pretty good pizza too.)

Default Best St. Augustine Ghost Tour

Meh. The ghost tours in St. Augustine could be a lot better if you ask me when you consider how old the city is, but we did this "City of the Dead" ghost tour a few months ago with some people from out of town that was really fun. It's kind of a haunted pub crawl and they have one like it in Savannah. The company is Tara Tours, I think, but it is definitely the "City of the Dead" tour that was good.

years ago I did one with Ripley's believe it or not, we even got a tour of the building after hours, they did a walking tour. The only thing about St. Augustine is that there are so many tours going on, it takes away from the experience. Went back with my wife at the time just the two of us, 2am in the morning and everywhere was just crowded with tours.

Other than that, St. Augustine is awesome!
