Hey, I was born in Jacksonville but I moved out within 4 years. Since then I've been living in north Colorado and I just wanna know, since I haven't been within 500 miles of it in 14 years how has my birthplace changed?

So basically, how has Jax changed since 1995?

Very strong growth. Jax was probably around 650,000 city - 950,000 metro when you left. Now it's more like 850,000 city - 1,300,000 metro.

Total transformation of the JTB corridor. Now it's full of office parks, apartments, and upscale retail. The Southside in general has really exploded with sprawl. I-295 is now a full loop.

More strip malls EVERYWHERE. Although that had already started by the mid 90s.

More tropical landscaping. The palm tree planting extravaganza has really picked up steam in the past several years. A lot of new development in Jax is being built with a more South Florida character.

Downtown is still dead, but it's pretty safe and clean overall.

I think that covers the basics.

I disagree and agree:

- just a bigger city overall and that comes with it
- lots of suburbish type planned communities and commerical development on the Southside of town. Much of it on the higher-end, much of it would now be labeled "suburban sprawl"
- Downtown and the it's surronding neighborhoods are much improved. DT itself is not on par with other "major" cities, but it's improving. depsite what others not very familar with the area say, it's not dead in the least. I can elaborate if you wish. It's surronding neighborhoods are more gentrified and popular.
- still a military town, but not as much.
- dare i say more cosmopolitan/metropolitan? yes. it is. again, not on par with other larger cities, but definitely different than '95.

If you haven't been here since '95...there is no way you would still be able to find your way around. The road construction that started when you left is still underway.

Yeap, you can probably use the same GPS that you were using when you were 4!
