We are relocating to Jax, and I just got off the phone with Allstate to get an insurance quote. The agent warned me that the auto insurance rates in FL are really high - how bad is it!?

And are the car tags high, too? (We will be in St Johns County). In Louisiana, your initial tag was really expensive, but it was like $40 to renew each year after that. Here in Mississippi, tags are really expensive every year - and they go up rather than down with the value of your car!

Just trying to get an idea of what our expenses are going to be.

Thanks!

initial tags in St. John's County are about $400 a pop now. My insurance increased about 10 dollars a month from what it was in Charlotte, NC.

Thanks! I just heard back from the agent, and our car insurance would be less than what we pay now! Even with the $225 "new wheels" fee for car registration, $400 is much less than I paid for my current tag here.

I guess it's all relative...

Thanks for the quick reply

The one thing that I suggest for people shopping for car insurance would be to try for an annual renewal rather than a policy that expires every 6 months like with
Geico and Progressive and others that could drop you or renew at a higher rate if you have an accident or two during the life of the policy.

I went go get a tag today for a new car and they tried to charge me 800.00 until I showed them I had an a tag I just wanted to transfer and it was 100.00. I feel bad for those that need a new tag.

One thing for sure, if you want a new-to-newer car.......it will cost you for new tags. Just one of the down-falls with buying a car like that. Out-of-state transfer fees aren't cheap either! That is why there are so many people don't transfer/get new plates on their vehicle when they first move here. The maintenance guy at our complex has a Ohio plate on his truck with a tag that say 06-09 on it. He told me he has a "ownership paperwork problem" that he has to take care of, but it cost too much money at this time. A lot of times auto insurance will depend on how many vehicles are being covered, age bracket driving them and other factors.
Today, when it comes to "transfer fees", tags and auto insurance......better have the old check book or credit card ready!

We only pay around $800 a year for our auto insurance, full coverage on 2 vehicles. I don't think its too bad here (especially after customers from up north $2600/year). Thankfully, I haven't had to renew my tags since the hike of prices.

That's really low Cyrece.....what kind of liability coverage do you have? We're paying $1200 for 500,000...

I have moved in to Tallahassee from Missouri. Today I went to transfer my tag and they charged me $400+!! This is astonishingly high for me. In Missouri I just paid $30 for the same thing!! They charged me $225 for 'initial registration' and $90 for registration Tax, $90 for title, plus other fees. Why should I pay for the initial registration in the first place? I already had a tag from Missouri.
