I would like to know how to go about finding small family-run businesses that I can apply to. I once did that in a small town and got interviewed on the spot and hired. This ended up being a great work experience. Now I live in a larger city and am not sure how to go about identifying similar types of places.

In many states such as here in WA, you can go to the licensing website and look up the owner of any business. If the name and address are a human rather than a large corporation, especially if husband and wife, you can figure it's a family business. Some will still be incorporated, though. You can also look at websites, most family owned businesses are proud of that and show it. Mine for example, said something like "family owned and operated since 1986."
