I want to get your guy's opinions if maybe I have been scammed or not.
Last week I got a call from a local recruiter about a temp to hire job with a tech company. He arranged an interview for me with the company scheduled for this week, but he wanted to first meet with me to discuss what to expect for in the interview. So I met with him last week and even though I still knew I did not have the job yet, he had me complete a i-9 and w2 employment. He also took a copy of my drivers license and social security card. His explanation was that "IF" I'm hired, the paper work process will already be done.
Well today he calls and says that the company decided to hire an earlier candidate and that my interview has been canceled.
Can you call back and ask what has happened to the forms you filled out? If it is a reputable company, they should have shredded the forms. He may have been under pressure to have someone ready so it most likely nothing to worry about, as long is it is a known company, not a blind ad. I assume you checked the website of this recruiter.

I never fill out an I-9 unless I am guaranteed a job. Once the offer has been extended and written in stone THEN I will fill it out. I refuse. Especially with employment agencies! None have ever asked for a copy of my DL / SS card though... ??
I live in FL so it may be different where your at, I'd keep an eye on my identity just in case - it's hard to trust anyone who wants everything up front and then you never hear from them again. urgh.. employment agencies -- I could go on and on about them but in reference to your post OP, I would not give out that info or fill out forms unless I DEFINATELY had the job.
I don't know if you found a job yet but it is illegal for them to have you fill out an I-9 without an accepted job offer. You can check the government I-9 website that states that. www.uscis.gov/I-9Central
I also know that them asking you for your social security card is not supposed to happen. Check out the information on the social security government site Social Security Publications
People are preying on the uneducated (about whats acceptable and not acceptable) job seekers.
I hope this helps.
