Please do yourself a favor and check your credit score as well. Many employers can also rescind offers if someone has poor credit and it is better to know it and work with it than it is to not know it.
I also agree with charlygal to include your degree as in progress.
Charlygal, you are spot on... assuming I told them I had a degree. However that never happened. I told them my degree was incomplete, but near completion. However I needed to fulfil my financial obligation to the university before I could take my final hours. AND for that reason my records were being held.
I wouldn't create a post saying I was honest, when I actually lied. The fact that I didn't have a degree and they continued on with the process was the 'oversight' on their behalf.
Is there a chance that any portion of this debt has gone to a collection agency, or been reported as bad debt?
It may be that they were fine with the records on hold, but have a bad debt threshold that was exceeded.
They wouldn't take a simple copy of your degree? The only time I have ever needed my transcripts was when I was applying to sit for a certification exam.
It's unfortunate but not illegal. Also it could simply be company policy. They might require that you have your degree in hand before employment. I'm confident you were honest, but it is possible that whomever interviewed you misunderstood something or didn't know the policy.
Also, I get that your degree was on hold, but maybe the company got bad info from the school. I.e. maybe they were trying to verify your degree and the school didn't/couldn't even confirm that you were a past student. Sometimes they are limited in what they can say "X graduated in 2010" and can't say that "X has attended" or "His degree is on hold". Just like how companies often don't give references and can simply say "so-and-so worked here for this time period" to avoid lawsuits.
