So, I had an interview a week ago at a company. I met the hiring manager and then his manager. The interview was pretty straight forward and not too difficult. It went ok to me.
Fast forward to today, I get a call from HR (almost had a heart attack because I thought they were calling with an offer) and they said that they went with an internal candidate, but they have the same position open with a DIFFERENT manager/team. The HR rep said that they had a lot of positive feedback from my first interview and they want me to interview again.
My question is, are they really interested? or are they just yanking my chain?
I want to be excited, but this unfortunately has happened to me before and I didn't get an offer.
Just go to the interview and try not to get excited until you are offered the job. When someone is invited back for a second interview it usually means you are getting closer to being hired so just stay positive and good luck.
That sounds very positive to me. It wouldn't even cross my mind that they were yanking any chains. What would be the point? Be excited, go in brimming with confidence and see if this alternate position would be a good fit for you!
Yes, they are really interested. But keep in mind, it's a different manager and different team so you will be repeating much of the prior discussions. The prior manager probably didn't give any details to the people that will be interviewing you. In fact, the prior manager might not know that you are being interviewed for a position on the other team.

They are not going to waste time interviewing you again if they were not interested, but the manager of the second opening is not going to hire you without meeting and interviewing you. Hopefully this second time you will do even better and end up with an offer.
very common. Just play along. And you coming in for a second look will speak volumes about your seriousness about the offer.
