I think they just mean that specific job as opposed to one somewhere else or even with the same company. They aren't asking why you want 'a' job because they can infer that you do want to pay your bills.
You may think it's a stupid question, but as a hiring manager it's one that I ask, but more in the form of " What about this position interests you?" or "Why are you interested in joining XYZ Company?"
The purpose is to try to look for a genuine interest in the work or the environment. I guarantee if I ever got a " to pay my bills" answer ( and I don't think I ever have) that candidate would be done.
I need people who are interested in their jobs, not someone who just shows up every day for a check.

I bet the guy who wants to pay his bills works harder than the guy who blew smoke up your ass about having a "genuine" interest. No wonder decent hard working people cannot find work with all the games you people play.
Every interview question is stupid. You have to tell them what they want to hear. THey know you're lying, but want to know how badly you will suck up for a job. If I answered interview questions honestly, I would be telling them the opposite of what they want to hear.

I'm a single mom and I damn well have to work to pay my bills. But my employer and I are both better off if I can do that while working at a job where I do in fact have a genuine interest. A decent hard working person would understand that.

Surely you jest. What matters is if the person is a hard worker. Everything else is irrelevant. All these questions amount to is a mental power trip on the part of those doing the hiring today because there are no correct answers. Funny how I got every job I interviewed for before the advent of these psychobabble BS questions and now I can't. It's disgusting.

I fully agree with you, anybody who shows that creepy fake enthusiasm for a job is just blowing smoke.
When I was younger I worked construction, with a LOT of grumpy/salty dudes, but they taught me a great trade, and they worked harder than most people Ive ever met, and I can guarantee you, myself nor none of those guys gave two craps or were " genuine " about the CVS, Burger King or your Grandmas garage we were building, we busted our ass and moved on to the next project.
Like I said, all this is just pseudo-psychological feel good stupidity these hiring " managers " use to make themselves secure about their easy ass jobs.

That means more more screening, so the credit check, background check, and more difficult applications. With the cost of hiring, they also want to hire people that really want to be there and are likely to stay. People who can't change with the business

It has nothing to do with reducing numbers and has everything to do with the corruption and laziness inherent in corporate america of which it has become rife since they tanked our economy and bought our government.
