I have 5 jobs (dating back 10-11 years), two degrees from different schools, 6 certifications, and 6 vendor training courses ($25K invested into my skillset) on my resume. It takes up all of two pages. I'm 30.
In the future, I'll need to drop older jobs or some of the certs/training off if they become irrelevant to job I'm applying for. Currently, I don't think I could trim much more.
job hopping is looked at as negatively as it used to be, some companies see that as bringing outside views and ideas to stagnant growth. 6 jobs in 5 years is a bit much but with the correct reasoning it could be over looked. that said, get your resume to 1 page
5 years out of college resume should be no more than 1 page.
15+ years out of college 2 pages is expected for an experienced professional at mid-career level.
3 pages or more would only be for high level positions requiring lots of experience or professions like a college professor/research scientist where they might need to list all their published articles, books, participation in relevant professional boards, committees, etc. Somebody like Stephen Hawking would have a minimum 3 page resume.
You would have to explain to me when I was the HM why I would even want to hire a rapid job hopper. Why would it be worth my while to hire you, and spend time and money training you so you can hop onto the next job. You have better have a very good reason to do so, or you would not be considered.
The only reason to even consider talking to you, would be if there were no other applicants that were any better, if it was a permanent job not a temporary or contract job.
Varies by industry too. I have been interviewing for mid to senior(4+ years exp) level positions in IT for the past several years. I've never even seen a 1 page resume. 3-4 pages seems to be the norm. Biggest I've seen was a 12 pager!
I am thinking about applying to a new job however I need some direction on my resume.
The very first job I had out of college is highly relevant toward this new job however listing it on my chronological resume will cause it to be two pages long.
Is it a bad thing to have a two page resume after being out of college for 5 years?
Of course I could write a functional resume in which I only show the jobs that are relevant but then I will have several gaps.
Please help.
NEVER a two pager. Everything on one page. Write a paragraph about the skills you have using keywords commensurate with the job description your are applying for. List job titles instead of previous employers. www.alis.ab.ca
Don't worry that you have a list of one year jobs. It is highly common in this day and age.
You really think candidates going for 6-figure jobs are going to chop out crucial information on their qualifications, experience, and education just to worry about how many pages their resume lands on? lol.
