Most major employers don't have HR do employment verification. They use a third-party company for this, which gives out the dates of employment and if the employee separated the company voluntary or involuntary. This is all they need for employment verification or your paystubs. Large companies do this besides to shield themselves from claims that HR said something negative or incorrect about a current/former employee, but there is a pure logistical reason for doing this. Employees who no longer work there over the years from a large company can be tens of thousands of people. They would have to spend money on additional staff to answer these inquiries and there is no benefit to them for doing so. These third-party verification companies can be used for employees applying for a loan to verify they work there.

Any company in 2019 demanding you give them your current supervisor's name and contact info, don't pursue the job. Because it makes no sense and they are out of touch.

I have always enjoyed a great work record. I had nothing to hide and I encouraged potential new employers to contact my old employers. I always left one job for another that paid more or had better benefits. I had one past employer that offered me a raise to stay; but it did not beat the offer from the new employer. It worked for me and for the companies that I worked for. Of course it is possible that it could have played out another way.
