I work as a consultant and my contract ends 1st wk of Sep, I am planning to take 6 weeks off to catch up on various issues - spending a week with my little nephew that I have not seen in ages and then 2 wks with my parents (they live in another country) that I haven't seen in ages as well and perhaps 3 wks doing some travel. That will put me returning to the US end Oct/early November to look for another job, how much of a disadvantage is it to look for work Nov-Dec? I know hiring is slow during these months...I would hate to just sit around unemployed for months, when exactly does hiring pick up again?

Companies hire around Nov-Dec-Jan for the holidays.

November and December are EXCELLENT times to look for a job.
Why?

Think Thanksgiving and Christmas. People slack off looking and often that is an ideal time to find a job.
