I was checking my messages last night and it was from some company calling because I was used as a reference for Mr. Such and they would like to talk to me.

Well I'm not speaking to anyone about him because I don't appreciate being used as a reference and not being asked first. Damm I had enough sense to ask all the people on my reference list before I used them. Damm it's amazing how stupid some people can be these days.

Yes, but only if it was for a friend or co-worker I got along with well. They called you, so did you give him your telephone number?

Yes he had my number but I still would like he if had brought to my attention that he used me as a reference. He is a friend I have only talked to about 2 times in 2009 and once in 2008 because his life changed and he got married and had a kid.

Why not? Yeah protocol dictates that one should notify the listed person but sometimes that may not be possible. Was this someone you had "job coached"? That's a legitimate reference. Is the person a friend? When you go to get a car loan, for example, you have to list 3 friends that can attest to your character.

Yes, and since I hadn't seen or talked to the guy in years it caught me a bit flat footed. After a few minutes of 'who?' and sifting through the cobwebs of when I had worked with him, not sure I helped him or not.

Personally given the climate for finding a job, I would be annoyed they didn't warn me first but I would give the person a reference, tell the truth about their job performance and capabilities.

Think about how long you struggled to find a job and take pity on this guy and help him out, especially if he is married with a child.

No it was a friend but I still like to be made aware so I can expect that type of call.

I can understand that, but it would probably cost you 5 minutes of your time, and who knows you could be rewarded in some way by the guy if he gets the job.

I don't mind, it's not really a big thing. I'm happy to help out a previous coworker or someone who worked under me.

The only time I got pissed about it was when someone I've never actually worked with who I vaguely know as a social acquaintence used my name with one of my freelance clients to get a gig. Put it this way, I don't even know her last name--she isn't a friend, a former coworker, nothing. Pissed wasn't the word, I pretty much flipped out and haven't spoken to her since.

I would agree. Yeah, he should have asked you, but also it would be pretty jerky to refuse to give a reference because he didn't in order to "punish" him or something.

What would be more effective would be to contact your friend and let him know that you would like to be notified if he is going to be using you as a reference.
