Is this something new? I've never experienced anything like it. Three places I've applied recently have told me they will be scheduling group interviews. This isn't the old stress interview tactic with multiple interviewers. It's calling in all the applicants you think might fit the job and interviewing them in a group all at one time.

Is this the HR equivalent of throwing us all into a mosh pit and the one that comes out alive wins the job?

Does anyone have any experience or tactics for dealing with this? How do you manage to look like a team player and still come out on top?

I've seen group interviews done for jobs in retail for years. I know that call centers often use them as well. It weeds out the wall flowers and the people who are overbearing.

I had one for a retail job 20-some years ago. After it was all said and done, the people who were overly aggressive and who dominated the group, didn't stop to liste to what others were saying, they were gone. Also the people who never said a word were gone.

It makes sense for positions like that. But if they are looking to hire RN's, it seems rather ridiculous.

Yes, we did this all the time in banking. This is simply making the most out of time and seeing how you handle yourself in this situation. Rather than have you come back in meet each person individually--it's done in a group. Group interviews has been going on for years. I've done them and I have been in your situation. Relax, gather your thoughts and be a better version of yourself.

Of course, they are throwing you in the pit. Many people find it hard to be in this situation. Trust me, it's no big deal. Just stay focused, remember names, be truthful and forthcoming and have pertinent questions.

Yellowsnow, sorry, I answered the question without realizing its for multiple applicants. I find this method condescending. A very terrible method to use for applicants. These types of jobs must be on the lower end. In my over 20 years of experience, I have never come across this style. In my previous post, like I said, we've done group interviews. That was one applicant being interviewed by several bankers at once.

Good luck, hope someone who has used this tactic or been through it gives you advice.

Thanks Annerk. I will strive to be somewhere in the middle ground. Not overbearing or reticent.

Anyway, I have nothing to lose by going. I'll view it as a learning opportunity.
