If you put it out there publicly for the world to see, then there's nothing wrong with an employer or potential employer looking to see what you have to say.

Why the hell not? Do you know how easy it is to type someone's name into google and see what pops up?

If an employer rejects an applicant based on what he or she has on a social networking site, than that applicant doesn't deserve to be hired by a company that pays more than minimum wage. Don't use your personal information on a social networking site, and do not use an email address that is linked to a social networking site. Use commonsense.

The subject of facebook etiquette and employment has come up several times on this forum, and it is always humorous to me to read the 'advice' about facebook from people who clearly have no idea what facebook is like--they don't have an account, they don't know what the website looks like, they don't know what information is contained in an individual's account, and they have no idea how other people access that information. It's just 'well I heard that...' speculation.

I googled my name and the only that came up was a radio control truggy race and a RC car race.

I have a facebook account, but I don't use my real name or other personal info.

And your facebook page will be one of the first things a search engine finds. It will probably show that at the top, ahead of all the research papers your name is also in, or the impressive news articles about you. Luckily people do have control over what they post on their personal web pages. And you can control what they see of your "friends".

Plus facebook is evolving - many employers have their own facebook page for the company and they actually want employees and others to link to them as fans or whatever.

It can be a great way for a business to post information, advertise - and they are using it.

It's a useful social networking tool for more than one purpose but like anything else you have to have a brain and use it.

Also -- instead of being paranoid, use facebook to your advantage. Find out of the company has it's own facebook page and use it for research so you can be better informed and be hired. It can give you good insight to the culture of the company, see it's "fans" which would be other employees working there. You can see it's news events, special activities, fundraising and so on that it's about.

And -- if you think they'll look yours up, then prepare it for just that. Make sure your page is professional and fits with their goals and culture.
