Any reason why KC BBQ is so expensive? I'm originally from NC and am used to paying around $4 for a sandwich and $8-10 for a platter with a meat and 1 or 2 sides.

A sandwich at most KC BBQ places is 6-8. With one side, it's around $12.

Has anyone gone elsewhere for BBQ (Texas, Oklahoma, etc)? How did the prices compare?

I don't know if I've ever seen sandwiches at $4 in KC.

Central Texas BBQ is all about slow smoked dry rubbed beef brisket, and I'd say prices are about the same as you quoted for KC, or maybe $14 per 1/2 lb for sliced beef, brisket or shoulder. Less for pork.

The prices you quoted for NC are lower than most parts of the country today, I'd say.

I noticed restaurant prices in general in North Carolina were lower than I expected, at least last year when I traveled there. I remember eating a large lasagna meal for less than $6, and a barbecue sandwich platter from a general store stand for about $7.50. (both western NC).

Beef prices in this part of the nation took off last year. It's probably $1-$2 more per pound in the grocery store from a year ago.

Quick search of online menus:

Joe's Kansas City - Sandwiches range from 5.79-7.79. Fries/sides are in the $3 range per single serving.

Arthur Bryant's - Sandwiches are mostly 9.50. Fries are $3.45 for a full order, or $2 extra with a sandwich.

Gates - Sandwiches are 5.75-9.55, depending on amount of meat. Fries/sides in the $3 range.

RJ's - Sandwiches $7.95-$8.95. Fries/sides $2.45-4.95, depending on size.

Smokin' Guns - Sandwiches $5.25-$7.25. Fries/sides $2.50, $4.95 for a pint of beans, various cold salads, etc.

Woodyard - Sandwiches $7.45-$8.95. Add a couple of dollars to include fries.

Danny Edward's - Sandwiches $6.99 - $10.49. Fries $4.20 for a full order.

Beef prices have increased, overall, but the above prices are for an entire range of smoked meats, not just beef. Danny Edward's southern-style pulled pork BBQ sandwich, which is only offered in the large size, is actually one of the most expensive on the list, exceeding beef offerings anywhere.

I still can't believe that some places charge almost $10 for a sandwich with no sides. The wife and I usually go to Big T's and get a burnt end platter and a side of fries. The portion is big enough for us both.

You think it's expensive in KC. Try having it shipped to you .

You could also easily split a sandwich from Arthur Bryant's, bringing the cost down to the $5 range. Also important to note that a full order of fries from most places I listed is sufficient for 3-4 people.

In most of those cases, the prices are high, but the servings are huge.

If the sandwiches were TOO inexpensive, I'd be concerned about the quality of the beef.

I agree. However, I was less than impressed with OK Joe's portions. The fries are a decent portion, but their sandwich is more bread than meat. They have great fries, but the rest of their food is overrated.
