Hi, we're moving from the east coast and have some questions re: the earnings tax. if I am employed in KCMO but live in JoCo, how does this 1% tax work? It seems crazy that KS and MO don't have a reciprocal relationship. KCMO income taxes are higher than KS (6+1% vs 4%)...so how does one take a deduction on the earnings tax paid in MO if you live in KS? Do you get anything back from KS?

Hi there. Moved from KC to DC area, so I did what you are doing in reverse.

The KCMO etax is independent from the MO and KS income taxes. MO and KS do have reciprocal income taxes if I remember correctly. You generally pay more to KS, but again, it's been a while since I dealt with both states.

The KCMO etax is a local income tax. It's just like the local income taxes you pay in the Baltimore area only they collect it via the state and it's by county. Most counties in DC/Baltimore area have 1-3% etax on top of any other tax you pay to Maryland, Virginia, DC etc.

If you are working in Missouri, why not just live in Missouri? There are plenty of really nice places to live on the MO side. If you do want to live on the Kansas side, I don't think you will notice a huge difference in taxes though. You will pay the KCMO etax regardless so you would probably have a lower overall tax rate if you lived in MO. But you would get back any difference from the other state.

You're going to pay if you either live in KC MO or work in KC MO. An unfair tax, taxation with no representation.

If you're not working in KC MO, don't live in KC MO. And if you have children and have to work in KC MO, live in a nice suburb with good schools, churches, services, etc.

But they are working in KCMO...

And if you really want to avoid paying taxes you can't vote on, then the OP probably should not move to the KC area and live in one state and work in the other. They are going to pay a lot more in state taxes than the KCMO etax.

At least paying a state tax (KS) is taxation with representation. Paying a KC MO earnings tax and not living in KC or getting to vote on the earnings tax is taxation withOUT representation.

But if you live in one state and work in another, you have little say in where you taxes go in that scenario either. I just think it's a silly argument to avoid the KCMO etax for this reason and move to a totally different state where you have even less say in where your tax money will go.

If one works in Kansas, live in Kansas, a win-win situation. Tax money to Kansas is going to good leadership in government. A no brainer supporting Kansas with taxes.

Yes, because Kansas current government is functioning "so well" with the credit rating downgrade and Brownback having a 25% approval rating. Thanks for the humor.
