Hello friends

We are looking for a liberal Christian church to attend - not a fire and brimstone, railing against social mores type of church, but one that focuses on Jesus' good works that tends to be more tolerant of alternative lifestyles. We'd particularly like one that is active in the community organizing charitable activities or mission trips. It would also be great if they had services on days other than Sundays - like weekday evenings, Saturdays, or Sunday evenings.

Preferably in north Johnson County or midtown/Plaza/Brookside/Waldo.

And let's please not discuss the merits of a liberal church vs. a conservative church - I'm not likely to change my mind, and neither are you Thank you!

I beleive Unity Church on the Plaza is fairly liberal. I know they do alot of community education programs. They also host quite a few fundraisers for local organizations.

You may also look into local Episcopal Churches. I beleive they will fit your needs perfectly.

Abiding Peace Lutheran Church in North Kansas City may not be in your distance range, but it's quite liberal and very alt lifestyle-friendly. If you have any background knowledge of Lutheranism and the difference between its synods, it is an ELCA church, rather than the more locally prominent (and considerably more socially conservative) LCMS.

Unity Church on the Plaza
Unity Church of Overland Park
Center for Spiritual Living which is near 39th and State Line on the MO side (still close to Northern JoCo)

Best of luck!

Also, All Souls' Unitarian Universalist, which is off the Plaza right by KCAI and the Nelson-Atkins and the Kemper, is also a very welcoming place, and UU is generally liberal. To me, it's always felt less church-like, and more really good thought-provoking lecture-like...more academic than spiritual, to me, but it's a nice place, none the less. Very peace- and social justice-centric, which I always appreciate.

Good recommendations, Samantha. I would second the Center for Spiritual Living - and I believe they have a Wed night service.

If these recommendations aren't "Christian enough" then maybe check out Jacob's Well, which I believe is more Jesus-y, but still alternative/youth/urban focused.

Default Disciples of Christ Christian churches

St. Andrew's and Country Club Christian churches are "liberal" in that they are affirming, and emphasize social action.
