They will never be safe, not for the ground water and not for the stability of the earth. Sure, let's dig a gigantic trench through Kansas for the Keystone pipeline, and then let's frack the bejeebers out of the state. What a progressive and forward thinking way to bring jobs to Kansas, eh? Brownback is looking backwards.

The Keystone pipeline I'm less concerned about.
The fracking issue is something that IMO requires more caution.

It looks like he would like to keep prices high at the pump. These new technologies to recover trapped fossil fuels is only feasable as long as oil prices stay high.

I don't think Fracking is that new. It is almost by definition a method of recovering fossil fuels only when prices rise above a certain level

Google Barnett, Marcellus, and Balken shale formations. New horizontal drilling techniques have led to an explosion of oil as well as natural gas drilling in the US. We export natural gas abroad now which was unthinkable 5-10 years ago. Like all commodities, export demand depends on global demand in foreign markets. Price depends on speculation.

IMO speculation is most likely to just add short term noise.
Long term prices are supply\demand driven.
