Answering only because nobody else did.

I lived in SoFla for three decades and people would ask about hotels, and I'd have to reply "hellifino, I own a home, I have know clue about the hotels here."

Perhaps Tripadvisor can help. The reviews are pretty good. Aston Islander on the Beach (Kapaa, HI) - Hotel Reviews - TripAdvisor

I agree that TA is the better source of info not to mention each of the Kauai properties have their pros and cons depending on you and what you want out of the trip.

thanks guys,
i guess what i was really wanting was about location....not so much the hotel.....(i have checked TA and the reviews are decent).
what i was hoping for was things like: 'no, don't book that hotel cause it's on a side of the island that has sharks with laser beams attached to their heads....' or something like that....

I stayed at Islander on the beach for my first trip to Kauai, and for the budget minded it is excellent. Right on the beach, next to coconut marketplace, next to Trees lounge, ideally situated for both North and South shore excursions. Only downside is parking limited and pool is not that big, but has a bar next to it. Go for it!

This hotel is in Kappa and is generally not a great swimming beach. It is close to Lydgate Beach Park, which is okay...not my favorite but on a nice day it can be pretty good there- especially if you are away from the pavilion area.

Kappa is a good location, halfway between the North and South shore. It will probably take you at least 30ish mins to either Princeville or Poipu. It will take at least an hour to get to the west side. If you have your heart set on either the North or South shore, stay there. But if you want a reasonably priced, decent hotel that gives you easier access to all points in the island, stay there. If you were to stay in Poipu, for example, it would take an hour to get to the north shore and about half an hour to Waimea, 35 mins or so to Kapaa...

I actually don't mind staying in Kapaa, you have the Safeway, Costco, and Walmart all within 20 minutes. The North Shore is easily accessible. If you use priceline and name your own price, choose Lihue for city then pick resort, you would either get the Kauai Beach Resort or the Marriot, we just got the Kauai Beach Resort doing name your own price for around 95 a night and the place looks pretty decent.
