What's the scoop on Kauai's public transportation? Are buses convenient? I'm thinking that renting a car is still probably the best way for me to see the island, but I just checked into rental rates.....and it'll cost close to $900 to rent an "economy" car for 2 weeks!! (i searched several different sites) And, I think I might be charged extra for being under 25

I wonder if there are better deals that I'm just not finding...or is $900/2wks pretty much what people pay? If it is, then I'd best prepare to only have a car for a few days and see as much of the island as possible during those days...and the rest of the time, I'll stick to surfing at a nearby beach.

The question is not "are buses convenient" the real question is "are there buses?"

You could check out garage sales or Craiglist for a used bicycle.

It all depends on where you want to be able to get to.
Some people hitchhike, but of course that has pros & cons.
Some people ride bikes, but it might depend on your fitness and the distance & condition of the roads

Don't forget to add in the cost of gasoline to your rental.

If you are calculating costs - does it cost more to stay near the beaches where you want to surf? If so, is the additional cost as much as renting a car & buying gas?

We have the Kauai bus system here, but it is not really reliable. It takes you all over the island.

I would rent a car for a least a few days so you can see Waimea Canyon and drive to the North Shore, etc, etc.

I would not depend on a bike. The traffic is not really safe for bike riders.

And yes, you probably will be charged an underage fee. On the good side, gas at Costco was $2.69 today!

Rent a car. If your going to be there for a bit longr then a short vacation. Buy an island beater on craigslist.
