I left Kentucky for work in Cincinnati when I was just out of college. Stayed three years; came home every weekend I could, never did like Cincy very much: too big, too dirty, too dangerous, people were too reserved, too conservative, and seemed rude and unfriendly far too often (not everyone, I hasten to add - met some VERY good people up there as well). My first supervisor was a pill, which didn't help (really - previously unbeknownst to me, five individuals had held my position during the three years prior to my arrival - all had left because of this horrible person. I asked for a transfer to another location within two months of taking the job). Pluses were great parks and museums, proximity to Central Kentucky, other big-city amenities.

But I never, ever regretted coming home, for a newly established position in my profession, after three years of what felt like exile. I do wish my salary had been more generous back home, but the trade-off was worth it.

Not originally from Kentucky, but hubby was sent here when he was hired at his current job. Was here for 3 years, LOVED it, got a promotion and transferred back to our home state, HATED it, circumstances went our way and after almost 3 years he got another promotion and transferred back here to Kentucky. LOVE IT!

If he gets transferred again, he can live in a little box near his new office and send the $ for me to live here with our boys.

Hubby left here in 1968 for Vietnam. 40 years later we are back and he never knew how much he missed Kentucky until we retired here last year. I will leave Kentucky myself when they scatter my ashes and not one day before that.

I have left Ky many times. First at 17 right out of high school to Bay Area Cali, where I had been told my whole life by my cousins about the wonderful world of California. : ) It was fun for awhile, and at first, I said I will never go back to Louisville. But ofcourse, after a marriage, and a 7 yr move to Ft. Lauderdale, and another 8 in Northern Pa....with a brief 2 years in Southern Cali, I am back home again. It feels much better to be home now, after I have experienced the life styles of other regions.
I still long for the southwest and pacific northwest. Maybe one day

I was raised in the Ashland area then relocated to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale for 30 years.
I recently moved back to Russell Ky and absolutely love it. I brought my NYC husband with me and although it has been a bit of a culture shock for him he is adapting well.

It's nice to see that so many people love KY and want to come back to it. No matter where I travel to, and I do love to travel, I am always so happy to see these KY hills when I come home. My sister moved something like 13 times in 23 years and lived in 9 different states in all regions of the country and she says when she or her children cross the KY state line they say they are home and they haven't physically lived here in 17 years. There is just something about KY that calls people back.
