We have always had mountain lions or wildcats in southern Kentucky in the very rural woodsy areas. We used to have a farm on the Gasper River and people we allowed to hunt and hike spotted them several times. We also had these huge wild mountain goats. You would look up on a cliff and they would just be staring down at you.

Bobcat or wildcat is what they are called in Kentucky. The UK mascot is a bobcat or wildcat. I have never heard anyone call it a panther here.

Nah, a wildcat-bobcat is a different animal and considerably smaller than a panther--cougar-mountain lion.

The wildcat is noted as the mascot of Northwestern University.

A panther is black, a wildcat is brown spotted and mingled. UK's mascot is a Kentucky wildcat which is known as a bobcat also.
