One of the most affordable US metro areas to live in.
Quoting from Press article...

..If living on the cheap ranks high on your priority list, Johnson City is a good place to be.
Kiplinger’s Personal Finance has released its lists of the country’s most and least-expensive metro areas, and Johnson City ranks as fifth least expensive, at 86.6 percent of the national average. Fort Smith, Ark. (85.2 percent) is the nation’s cheapest metro area, while New York is the most expensive, with a cost of living more than double the average...

Thanks for the reminder. Yes, cost of living is an important factor for me, since I would like to live on my social security and a little savings, and write some stuff I always wanted to write (without getting a regular job - lol). And except for the humidity, Johnson City looks pretty nice, not too liberal, not too completely conservative, smaller town but not too small. If I move, I just have to figure out how to get myself from the northwest down to northeast Tennessee.

It's interesting what a huge number of places have a cost of living index in the range of 86 to 90 or so, which isn't much difference.

What I mean is that for a while I have been looking online at Johnson City and places, especially for things like cost of living (because if I can manage it I would like to keep my expenses down to my social security - it would make it easier to do some writing - nothing special just some philosophy stuff). I live in the US Northwest, beautiful. But it looks like Johnson City is fairly nice too. Couple of years ago I was in Virginia Lynchburg region for a three months. Hard to put into a few words, but there's a different atmosphere than the Northwest.
