I am applying to the ETSU nursing program. Does anyone know how competitive it is to get in? I didn't see any demographics on thier site, such as average age, GPA, etc. On the west coast where I currently reside, you just about have to give a limb to get into a program.

Also, I noticed that the VA hospital has openings for RNs. Do folks not want to work near or in JC after graduation? Is the VA an ok place to work? It can no doubt be a depressing environment.

ETSUs nursing program shouldnt be nearly as tough to get in as what you described from your area. It is a fine program though. As for jobs, just about every hospital around has openings, there is a huge shortage from what I understand.

I have a few friends in the nursing programs. I've heard that it isn't so bad to get into, its staying in that is the tough part. One girl told me, and I'm not sure how true this is, that if you fail two classes then you are out for good. Most of the hospitals around the area do offer sign on bonuses. I would say that it wouldn't be hard to find a job either. There are always jobs for hire in the newspaper for nurses.

I'll just say this: I never considered one of my cousins to be strong "college material," but she earned decent grades in high school through sheer perseverance and got into ETSU. She was later accepted into the College of Nursing and received her BsN, and is now making very good $$$ in a Kingsport hospital w/ all the overtime she can handle.

FWIW, pretty much all American hospitals are desperate for RNs.
