Did this store close? The article says the stores being purchased are closed.

It has not closed yet. It's still open and clinging on barely. Honestly, this store should've closed years ago.

It's in terrible condition and they've "curtained off" about 1/3 of the store due to the massive size and unused space.

Long overdue for closure. With this news, I expect it to close 1st or 2nd quarter of 2019 or so.

Good use for the space. But a prime retail spot that should've gone to a Publix or some other retail usage. Storage buildings/lots/spaces are typically unattractive and architecturally void of character. Ugh.

But at least the space will be filled, and not sit vacant.

This would be an epic failure.

I saw that article yesterday on Yahoo and sent it to the Times News, WCYB, and WJHL to have them look into and do a story on it. Hopefully we will learn more.

I though like most of you, think U-Haul is a complete waste of that prime property. There are a dozen other better locations for U-Haul to go instead of Kmart

some other articles I came across spoke about an ‘adaptive reuse’ strategy that U-Haul uses for this, so the stores are not rebuilt or even changed much at all other than the sectioning off for storage. I do agree though, for all the possibilities, this is a disappointment. But I am happy that this space won’t sit vacant. I’ve rented a couple U-Hauls in Kingsport over the past few years and it seems like I’ve been able to pick among several places already on stone drive, in colonial heights, and others.

The Times News did pick up and publish the article on U-Haul buying the Kingsport Kmart property. Yes the store is still open and it doesn't have a closing date set yet nor has it even started a store closing sale but it will happen. I also agree that it's a great property but I'm very disappointed that it's turning in to a worthless U-Haul center that isn't really needed nor wanted.

You just described pretty much every Kmart in this country.

Eighty more Sears and Kmart stores were announced as closing via a press release issued today. Kingsport was on the list, the closing sale should start in a couple of weeks or so and the store will close in March. Article is up on WJHL.

I read that. Way overdue, but glad to see something going in that space. Many visits to KMart in that location when I was a kid.

In the 80s, KMart was the Target of today. A good cyclical retail example of what's hot now/or not...A UHaul not ideal for that spot, but, it's gonna be occupied.
