Not to pick nits, but no snake is poisonous. Some are venomous.

I grew up under age 10 in a rural-ish subdivision on the west end of Church Hill in Hawkins County, here in the tri-cities.

We lived near a chicken farm (about 1/4 mile away), and this attracted snakes like crazy, and we saw snakes often on our property.

We lived in that house for about 6 years, and I only saw a baby copperhead one time. I was a kid, so I had no idea, but both my neighbor and dad said it was a copperhead, and they killed it.

I've never seen a venomous snake in the wild in Tennessee anywhere since.

I see black snakes, garter snakes and the occasional rat snake often--all harmless.

You really have to be looking for a venomous snake in this area to find one. They are mostly in remote woods and mountainous regions. But occasionally someone may find one on their property, but not common to see, it seems.

I live across from a big open field with a lot of wildlife. In the ten years I've been here I don't think I've seen a single snake in my yard.

So, to be frank, snakes here are not much of an issue.

I dislike snakes. And am always on the lookout for them.

After a few years in East Tennessee I have see a couple of black or rat snakes. They are long and quite ominous for those of us who are not particularly familiar, but they are basically harmless and they help keep the rodent population in check.

Venomous? Never seen a rattler nor a cotton mouth or anything venomous. They avoid people as much as we avoid them

Be aware. But it's not much of an issue.

Question Natural Disasters in the Johnson City Area

Hello all! As I am picking a place to move, I was wondering is the JC area affected by natural disasters often? I heard that JC and its surrounding areas had severe flooding just a few years ago. Does your life impacted by natural disasters to some degrees? How big do flooding, tornado and other natural disasters become a concern? Thanks!

There is a bit of flooding risk downtown in the Founders Park area. That's mostly been mitigated over the years unless there is an extreme rain.

Otherwise, the risk of natural disasters is very low.

Echoing what Serious Convo said flooding is only a concern in certain low-lying areas near streams and rivers. 97% of buildings and roads are not at risk to flooding.

It's rare but not unheard of to see an EF1 tornado, but due to the topography they are rather short-lived. It's nothing like Kansas or Texas.

Otherwise, it's just a few minor snow events (inches not feet) and the occasional hailstorm.

Rarely.

We don't get "ice storms" like the Plains. I can't remember the last time we had primarily an ice event.

Snow? Generally, we get one or two significant snowfalls of 5"+ or so annually. Most snowfalls are 1"-3" and melt in a day or so.

We had a snowfall of 6"-8" in early December last year. I'm not sure that we had more than a dusting the rest of the season.

In the ten years I've been in the area, ice has never really been a problem. Snow has kept me home from work maybe a day every two to three years. If you live within city limits the cities are generally pretty good about keeping roads plowed, although sometimes it can take a while to get to all of them, rural areas, not so much. Haven't had a serious power outage due to any kind of storm in years, but if that is something that concerns you a generator is always a handy emergency option to have.
