I noticed that JC is divided into 2 counties...Washington and Sullivan.
Property taxes are more in Sullivan county. MB or others...what is the difference between these counties?

hmm...Don't know where you got that info but JC is only in Washington County. Sullivan county is Kingsport and Bristol.
Taxes are higher in Sullivan County.
Check out this web site, it shows all the tax rates for all counties in TN then it shows the cities in that county and their tax rates, you add them together if you are within city limits.

That link shows that part of Johnson City is apparently in Sullivan County. Or there's another town in Sullivan County called Johnson City.

I'll have to agree....Johnson City is in Washington county. Sullivan is Bristol, Kingsport, Blountville. Trust me on this, I used to live in JC.

Now, as for other differences, Johnson City is the most populated of the tri-cities, it's a university town with ETSU and the big hospital there, plus, it seems to be a bigger retail center than Kingsport/Bristol. Kingsport seems to have more industrial type of jobs like Eastman Chemical, Willamette Paper, etc.....more of the manufacturing type of stuff. Around those parts, JC is looked at as the more "intellectual" or "upscale" (LOL) of the Tri-cities.

You are SO right and I never noticed that before! Blew my mind so I called the Sullivan County tax assessors office and asked why JC was listed on the Sullivan Counties tax assessors page. Here is the answer:
There are about 4 city blocks worth of land that is in an area called Piney Flats that is zoned as Johnson City but it is technically over the Sullivan County line. So, that tax rate only applies to that one, very small area.

Default Johnson City Question

Thank you everyone..that answers my question. I wasn't sure if it was one side versus the other, hence the inquiry.

Actually, there is a small part of Johnson City in Carter County too. There was something in the paper about them wanting to annex it. It's the area near the interstate (26).

Yes, you are right. It is in zip code 37601. They have Johnson City addresses but pay Carter County tax and go to Carter County schools.
