Just moved to the tri-cities area. Wanted to get a new driver's license. My realtor had given me a xerox copy of a "Newcomers" page from the telephone book (you can find it in the front section). It had all kinds of great info...the gas companies, electric companies, cable companies, etc. It also listed "Driver's Licenses".

In that secion it said that getting a Tennessee Driver's License was very easy...just bring in your current out-of-state driver's license. Cool. After consulting a map and figuring out where the ONE driver's license office was for Sullivan County (in the boondocks between Kingsport and Bristol..fyi), I drove there ready for a new license.

Not to be. Apparently, after 9/11, the rules got MUCH tighter, but nobody bothered to let the phone companies know...

I had to drive back home & to my safety deposit box to get my birth certificate, my social security card or passport, 2 bills from TN or something to show my residency and one other thing (but I've forgotten what it was, the clerk told me their website lists the items correctly. She had never seen nor heard about my page from the phone book I showed her...and was not too sympathetic)...plus my out-of-state license.

With said documentation, I went back, took my number and waited 3 hours and 20 minutes and walked out with a TN license.

Just be forewarned....bring all the documentation and bring a book!

That DMV on 11W is absolutely the BUSIEST I've ever seen.

I like the Elizabethton DMV - it's not as crazy busy and the people who work there are happy and friendly.

It's closed on Mondays.

I got my TN license last September at the office just off Boones Creek Rd. and only waited about 30 minutes. I did have to bring in all the documentation, but our real estate agent had already let us know what to bring so it wasn't a problem. Where was the office you went to? Please warn us.

It was the one on 11W. It's the only one listed for Sullivan County and I thought you had to go to the one in whichever county you lived in...? maybe not. I didn't think I had a choice. Oh, it also is closed on Mondays.
