I've got a question about the "alcohol tax" - is it any different than the 9.5% non-food tax? The stuff I buy from the grocery stores (beer) is 9.5% and when I buy hard liquor we get 10% knocked off after tax for being repeat customers, and it comes out just slightly less ($9.94 for a $9.99 bottle). Is it just not Washington County, or what?

Since this was split into a new thread, it was in reference to:

That same room during storytelling week in J-borough jumps to 125.00 a night [so apparently we soak the culture freaks for even more money.] Add in the fact that when the Beemer riders, et. al., get here they go buy a bottle or a six-pack for their hotel room which comes with, as we all know, one of the higher alcohol taxes in the nation. Then these same people usually eat out three meals a day at 9.5% sales tax....we're soaking these visitors pretty much as hard as we can. Probably 50 bucks each a day. Not to mention all the support staff in the hotels, restaurants, stores....that have jobs.
Which is all great, it means our taxes don't have to go up and national chain restaurants want to stay here which we get to avail ourselves of their presence 12 months of the year...I don't know. Seems like "touristas" aren't that bad a thing to me. [but that's just me.]

I don't know if I quite follow what you're asking. There is TN alcohol tax but that's separate and additional to the sales tax. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're asking.
For me, I just accept it as my contribution to jails, schools and potholes and buy my beer and wine locally but for high dollar items like a good single malt scotch which I only sip on occasion, I'll wait until I have some other business in VA or visit back home in MD or if I visit my brother in SC [a whole lot cheaper booze down in SC, if I buy a case or two of wine in Greenville the difference pays for the gas I spent to drive to visit my brother.]
