Hey, got a quick question: Does Knoxville have a good bus system that decently covers the area, east/west and north/south? I really would love to move there and rely on walking or biking as my main method of commuting, but I'd feel much better about getting rid of my car if I knew I could hop on a bus when needed...ie. for inclement weather.

It's okay, but not stellar. It basically exists at the core of the city and doesn't really go often into the county. This is a small city so it is not expected to have an outstanding public transportation infrastructure. And surrounding it is the burbs and a lot of rural areas. Welcome to KAT, Knoxville Area Transit!

Looked at the map and schedules at that site. It's not bad at all. Yes, as you said it's pretty much a small city, but actually the bus system is more comprehensive than I thought, and would work quite well. It's not too much of an issue for me if the buses don't go further out into the county, although I'm sure the residents probably wish they did. But I'd be living in an apartment anyway, preferably in the more urbanized area, so I'd strive to look for one somewhere along, or within walking distance of, a bus route.

Great info - thanks! You've really been a great help to me in these forums. I appreciate it!

Hi, Creeksitter. No, I'm not retired and not a student, either.

I'm pretty much a "Jack-of-all-office-trades", so to speak. I suppose if I were to apply a specific title to myself, it would be "Office Manager". But I've worked in several different fields, in a number of different office-related positions - ranging from retail auditor/bookkeeper, to customer service manager, to shipping & receiving manager/computer administrator of a discount department store. My last position was as an office manager for a storage rental company in which I single-handedly managed the office and oversaw the day-to-day operations of one of the company's locations.

So I pretty much fit in to any office environment. Thanks for asking - that was really nice of you.

I guess what I'm concerned about is you finding work that is close to a bus line. That is going to limit you in your job options but I guess it is do-able.

I've been thoroughly pleased w the KAT since I moved to Knoxville in October. They even have express routes from downtown to the edge city of Farragut and Turkey Creek. I live 1 block from route 31 and take it to and from work downtown once or twice a week. I live in a very walkable/bikeable neighborhood and the KAT route right through the middle of it is a nice amenity.

I understand, and I appreciate that you would be concerned. But it's not an absolute must that I get rid of my car. I'd simply prefer to if I could do it. I wouldn't get rid of it until I knew for certain that I would be able to meet my transportation needs. And even then, who knows - I would maybe consider keeping it, but simply not use it at all except when necessary. I don't have a car payment anymore, so it's just maintenance, gas and insurance that I would have to pay for....but still, it would save some money if I didn't have to do that.

I'm guessing they mean Lovell Road, which is Rt. 131.
