You guys rock! Thank you so much - I think we'll take the Google recommended route, since it also seems to be the consensus here. We actually were thinking of going through Atlanta to stay east of the mountains but you've talked me out of it, for sure. All great tips.
We'll make sure to stop in Knoxville, where all the nice people live

To the OP.... You better warn your hubby about speeding through Virginia. I won't go into it, but suffice it to say speeding in VA is hazardous if you like bragging about how much speeding you do without getting caught. Knoxville is also something to be careful about as not only the TN troopers work I-40/75, but the city police work those roads as well.

Should we avoid that route through Tennessee and go around through Atlanta and up? (It is a longer drive, but if it is safer, we'll go that way.)
Any tips or insight about conditions on the I-40 route during the winter months is greatly appreciated! I am sorry we're so ignorant about typical Tennessee winters! Thanks!!!
I'd be more worried about the DC Beltway than I-40. From Knoxville, I drive I-40, I-81, I-66, DC Beltway then 50 to go through MD and I can tell you there is never a time to me where the DC Beltway isn't the biggest nightmare of the trip. I can't even think about it with snow or ice.

Oh so true. When I drove from Mass to Florida the only part that gave me trouble was that darn beltway.

There is a major recontruction of the I 66/DC beltway junction. Avoid it at all costs, especially if your unfamiliar with the area.

The section of I 81 from the Tenn border to Wytheville Va. is notorious for heavy speed enforcement by local jurisdictions. Va has some pretty tough speeding laws. 15 over will get you some real serious trouble.

I have two speeding tickets, and both happened in that stretch. Also, I-81 around Wytheville is really the only area that gets iced over/hazardous relatively frequently, though I'm not too familiar with Nova.

Be warry about traffic and constructions. Weather can be simply resolved by checking the weather channel a few days before the trip and doesn't warrant a discussion as no one can predict except to say snow is rare at the elevations of the highway in the mountains. I lived in east TN and crossed over so many times I can't even count.

Traffic and contruction are your overriding concerns.
